Yay! I love starting a new series, don't you? There's just something so exciting about coming up with a new idea and putting it into action. I literally thought of this idea about 20 minutes before sitting down to write this post, haha. Gotta love it when Mercury goes direct; all the mental blocks just disappear!!

Animal spirits work with us in a variety of ways. Sometimes they present themselves as a temporary mentor, providing insight on a situation or dilemma. They come to us in dreams, or run across our path in waking hours, giving us a flash of inspiration! Then there are the animals that stay with us for the long-term, their spirits linked with ours in a divine relationship. I met my spirit animal during a guided meditation 2 winters ago, during a Yule ritual. His name is Cato, he is a Canadian Lynx, and he has been with me ever since.

We'll be working our way through the Animal Spirit Oracle deck by the Wild Unknown, looking at these animals as guides and messengers. What do they symbolize? What knowledge do they hold for us?

RACCOON: "Am I ready to grow into something more?"

Raccoon carries with it a message to be yourself, and stop hiding behind a mask. If you're not presenting the honest version of yourself to those around you, you're just limiting your own life. Do your friends and audience know the real you, or is the image you project just an act?

Yes, we wear many "masks" on a daily basis: Mother, wife, friend, boss. There are a lot of roles to play, and each must be approached uniquely. Raccoon wants us to make sure that we stay genuine and truthful to ourselves even as we move from one role to another.

Raccoon people tend to be shy at first, needing to build trust before opening up to others. But once they do, they are incredibly sociable and charismatic friends, always ready with a joke or funny story. They are also fiercely protective of their loved ones, and can get downright aggressive when they're provoked. People with raccoon spirits will give you the shirt off their back and always look out for the needs of others. They are the shoulder to lean on, a source of support and calm in times of chaos. Great problem-solvers, they love a challenge and thrive on new activities. Their incredible curiosity can get them into trouble sometimes, as they have a tendency to jump into things without having all the information. However, even when they're in over their head, raccoon people are resourceful and determined to find a solution.
